Spiez 2009

Day 2 - The second day of the fortieth Tempest World Championship brought two races and long waiting times for all participants. The third race was started at 0900 o’clock as planned with light South-Easterly winds (Oberwind). For the fourth race the time was too short before the wind dropped at noon which paralised the fleet for hours. This must be how the Americas Cup will feel off the coast of the Emirates. Freshly barbequed, the participants finally started for the fourth race with generously rounded 2.5 Beaufort at starting time; this time with Westlery wind (Unterwind). The lead remained almost unchanged after four races. Frank Weigelt from Germany could defend the lead followed by the the French boat steered by Philippe Boite and the Swiss boats steered by Stefan Fels and Mario Suter in positions three an four. Now there is a 33 year old boat is in the top five. The one design idea is alive. Stefan Erlacher from Germany dropped to place seventh due to the strong performance of Rolf Bär (5^th, Germany) and Jonathan Modral (6^th, UK). Two local crews from the Lake of Thun with Cornelia Cristen and Rudolf Jürg are in positions ninth and tenth.

Day 3/ 4 - On the third and fourth day, the weather remained unchanged: pure sun. The enormous heat made very difficult for the local thermal winds to develop. On the third day, the morning wind (Oberwind) was still strong enough for a single race in very light conditions. On the fourth day, the morning wind was too weak. It was only toward the end of the afternoon, at 16:24, that a single race could be started with light winds (2 Bft, Unterwind). In the end, it had to be shortened. In the rankings there were big changes over these two light wind races. The Swiss team of Stefan Fels and Timo Nef took the lead and are now followed by the French Philippe Boite and Regis Viateur. In third and fourth position, there are the German boats steered by Frank Weigelt and Rolf Bär. Another Swiss boat with Mario Suter and Andreas Hochuelie are in fiftth position.

Day 5 - For once the morning schedule was not sailing, it was the excursion on the Mountain Niesen.

The weather condition changed, storm and wind tells the forecast. The storm past us on south, but the wind visits us.

1400 o’clock the first race seven starts by moderate breeze from southeast (4 Bft.).

Occasionally the wind increased which ends in a capsizing. The crew enjoy a bath in the Lake of Thun, unharmed. Race eighth starts at 17.56 by light wind from west (2 Bft.).

There is an exciting competition for the lead position, between the first and the third are only three points!

Philippe Boite / Régis Viateur has now the lead followed by the Swiss Team Stephan Fels / Timo Naef. The German crew Frank Weigelt / Christian Rusischka are on position three. Mario Suter / Andreas Hochuli from Switzerland on position four followed by Crew Jonathann Modral / Colin Medows from Great Britain.

Day 6 (last) - To conclude the world championship the last race was started at 09:00 o’clock with medium Westerly winds; quite early after last night’s happy hour. For some the conditions were unusually challenging; unfortunately also for the equipment of Frank Weigelt who started into the race from a third position overall. His stay broke shortly after the start while he was still the leading boat. After that, only Phlipppe Boite and Stefan Fels were fighting for gold. In the end the German teams of Bethold Baehr (1st) and Stefan Erlacher (2nd) prevailed. Phlippe Boite and Regis Viateur from France finished third and thus secured the overall win. Stefan Fels and Timo Nef from Switzerland lost precious time with an unfortunate spinnaker manoeuvre but finished in ninth position and thus were second overall but first in the sprint to the first windward mark. The world championship ended with a very positive note, since the sailors were carried on hands in Spiez. Hence the standard to meet with the next world championship in Hoorn (Netherlands) is high.
